A Great Choice for Your Home

bioheat massachusettsAs someone who uses heating oil in your southeastern Massachusetts home, you probably already know some of the benefits it offers you. Heating oil is a safe and efficient way to heat your home. The heating oil W.H. Riley & Son delivers to our customers is even better. It offers many advantages over traditional heating oil. Let’s learn more about the benefits of heating oil and Bioheat Plus fuel specifically.

Why Choose Heating Oil?

Here are some of the benefits heating oil offers:

Bioheat Plus® Fuel

Bioheat Plus fuel is made in America and consists of a blend of ultra-low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel that’s made from organic and recycled products. These products include soybean oil, used cooking oils, inedible corn oil, canola, tallow, fats and algae. Bioheat Plus® fuel is the name used for blends that range from 6% to 20% biodiesel.

W.H. Riley is proud to deliver Bioheat Plus fuel to our heating oil customers. This fuel offers a number of advantages over traditional heating oil. Bioheat Plus® fuel burns more cleanly than traditional heating oil. That’s good for the environment and saves you money on the cost to heat your southeastern Massachusetts home. Plus, not only will your heating system function more efficiently, it will last longer and require fewer repairs.

Bioheat Plus fuel’s benefit to the environment is measurable. Compared to traditional heating oil, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 86%. Companies across the country are transitioning to higher levels of Bioheat Plus fuel. As this trend continues, heating oil will move closer to being carbon neutral, and as a result, we’ll see a reduction in its carbon footprint.

If you’re a W.H. Riley & Son customer, you’re already getting the benefits of using Bioheat Plus fuel. Converting to the use of Bioheat Plus fuel doesn’t require any modifications to your furnace, boiler, or storage tank. And most major heating system manufacturers accept Bioheat Plus fuel as covered under their warranties for use.

What to Do Before Autumn

central air tune up massachusettsThis summer has already been a scorcher. It might be hard to imagine not needing your AC to cool your southeastern Massachusetts home. But cooler days will be here before you know it. And soon you’ll be turning up the heat instead of the AC. Before those days come and your AC goes into hibernation, there are some things you should do.

Your End of Summer AC Checklist

Your AC works hard for you all summer, and that can lead to wear and tear that might cause problems next cooling season. Here are five things to do for your AC before the summer ends:

  1. Replace the air filter. You should have been changing the air filter throughout the summer. If you haven’t, do it before the start of heating season. This is especially important if you have a combined heating/cooling HVAC system. Changing your air filters on a regular basis is a simple and cost-effective way to help your air conditioner perform better.
  2. Clean around the outdoor unit. Check for and remove anything that may block airflow, e.g., bushes, grass, nests, and leaves.
  3. Clean and clear the coils and condensate line. This is best done by a professional as part of a maintenance visit. W.H. Riley & Son provides thorough AC maintenance. We’ll make sure that your AC is in good shape and that there are no unpleasant surprises in your AC’s future. Regular professional maintenance is the best way to keep your AC in excellent working order and prevent breakdowns.
  4. Inspect your AC. Look and listen. Look for any obvious frayed wires or rust. Listen for unusual sounds. If you hear anything out of the ordinary, contact W.H. Riley to request a service visit. Other things to look out for at the end of the summer are refrigerant leaks and frozen coils. If you schedule a maintenance visit with W.H. Riley, we’ll carefully inspect every component of your AC system for wear and tear and other problems. We also make sure all moving parts are fully lubricated and that there is sufficient refrigerant.
  5. Schedule a tune-up. If you didn’t get maintenance for your AC during the spring or early summer, do it now. The end of summer or early autumn is actually a great time to schedule your AC maintenance. Tune-ups don’t wear off, so doing it now will give you one less thing to worry about next spring/summer. And if we discover your AC requires a significant repair, there will be plenty of time to order replacement parts or upgrade your system. And because W. H. Riley also performs boiler and furnace maintenance, we can come to do your cooling and heating system maintenance during one service visit. How convenient is that? (Note: the temperature must be at least 70 degrees to properly service your AC. You can’t get a reliable refrigerant test below that.)

Reliable AC Repairs

If you notice any problems with your AC, contact W.H. Riley & Son for service. We’ll address any issues so that you can rest assured your AC is in good shape and will work for you come next summer. And whenever it’s time to replace your AC, we can help with that as well. We’re one of the region’s leading air conditioning providers. Whatever your AC needs are (maintenance, repairs, or replacement), our trained and certified technicians are ready to put their knowledge and experience to work for you.

Tips for Figuring It Out

propane level check massachusettsThere’s so much to love about Massachusetts during the summer—lobster rolls, pool parties, and firing up the BBQ grill. Now is a great time to take advantage of all the benefits grilling with propane offers. And propane grills offer a lot of advantages. Here are a few:

  1. They’re easy to start.
  2. They provide precise temperature control and consistency.
  3. They’re powerful and heat up quickly.
  4. They’re easy to clean.
  5. They’re cost-effective.
  6. They won’t let you down if there’s a power outage.
  7. Propane has a great safety record. Click here for safety information.

When it’s time to fire up the grill and get cooking, you don’t want to get caught without enough gas! Not sure if you have enough propane to make it through your next BBQ? Don’t worry, there are some easy ways to check your propane level.

Checking Your Propane Level

Here are three methods for checking your propane level:

The warm water method. This is a safe and simple way to determine how much propane is left in your tank.

  1. Fill a small bucket with warm to hot tap water.
  2. Pour the water down the side of the tank.
  3. Run your hand along the side of the tank and feel for a cool spot. The top of the cool spot indicates the fill level of the tank because the liquid propane inside the tank will absorb the heat from the water and make the metal wall of the tank cool to the touch.

Weighing the tank. Most propane grill tanks come with two numbers stamped on the handle. One is the water capacity (WC) and the other is the tare weight (TW). Your tank’s tare weight is its weight when it’s empty. Most grilling tanks weigh about 17 pounds when they’re empty and can hold about 20 pounds of gas.

To calculate how many pounds of propane are left in your tank, simply weigh it on a scale. Once you have its weight, subtract the tank’s TW number from its current weight.

Installing an external gauge. You can choose from a variety of gauge types:

  1. Inline pressure gauges install between the gas line from the grill and the cut-off valve on the tank, measuring pressures to determine how full the tank is.
  2. Analog propane scales look like luggage scales and are pre-set based on your tank’s TW.
  3. Digital propane tank scales give a digital readout of remaining cook time and gas fill percentage. Some even connect to smartphone apps.

How Much Grill Time Do You Have?

At the end of the day, what you really want to know is how much grilling can you do with the amount of propane in your tank?

On average, a medium-sized grill on high heat will use approximately two pounds of fuel per meal. That means you can get 18 to 20 hours of cooking time on a medium grill with a 20-pound propane tank. With a larger grill, that 20-pound tank might run out after 10 hours of cooking. However, all of these are just estimates, so it’s always good to have a backup so you’re always ready to grill.

Fill It Up

oil delivery massachusettsNow that New England is deep into summer, you’re probably not thinking about all the things you do to stay warm during the winter months. You’ve long ago traded your boots and sweaters for sandals and tee-shirts. In addition to enjoying lobster rolls and pool parties, chances are you’re spending more time thinking of fun ways to beat the heat. Since this is the season of AC’s, you might be tempted to stop thinking about your heating oil tank and let it run down to a lower level than you would during the colder months. But that’s not a good idea.

Even though winter may feel far away right now, decisions you make now will affect your heating system’s ability to keep you warm and comfortable when it gets cold again. As a responsible heating oil customer, it’s important to never let your heating oil tank run down to empty. That’s even true during the summer months. Actually, it’s a good idea to fill your tank during the summer. And W.H. Riley offers residents in and around Bristol County reliable heating oil delivery.

An Empty Tank Can Cause Problems

There are some serious reasons to keep a full heating oil tank. If your heating oil tank gets close to empty, debris can clog your oil filters. That is likely to reduce the efficiency of your heating system. Worse yet, it could cause it to fail. By keeping a full tank, you avoid the costly repairs associated with a heating system failure as well as the monthly bill increases that result from a system that’s running inefficiently.

W.H. Riley is proud to deliver Bioheat Plus® Fuel, which not only helps your heating system run more efficiently but also helps it last longer and require fewer repairs.

Another problem that comes from letting your tank’s level get too low is condensation. That’s especially true during the summer months when hot and humid days are typically followed by cooler nights. Those conditions can accelerate a buildup of condensation in your tank. Your tank is even more vulnerable to condensation if it’s aboveground, outside, or in an unshaded area. If water is allowed to build up in your tank by means of condensation, it can cause rust, and that rust can cause your heating system to fail. Again, keeping enough heating oil in your tank helps you avoid some very costly problems.

How full is full enough? Ideally, you should keep your tank at least half full all summer long. But the fuller your tank, the less likely you are to experience any of the issues mentioned above. Now is a great time to fill up.

Sign Up for Our Easy Pay Program

home fuel prices massachusettsMany of us are being tested financially. Just about everywhere you look, prices are on the rise. We’re paying more at the gas station and the grocery store. It’s costing us more to provide basic necessities for our families. In fact, most American households are paying significantly more a month on expenses as compared to a year ago.

W.H. Riley knows the financial pressure and stress you may be under. And so we offer our customers a way to stay in control of the propane and heating oil costs for their New England homes. With our Easy Pay program, you’ll have predictable fuel bills and can take the sticker shock out of at least one of your household expenses.

Our Easy Pay Program

Keeping a handle on your budget is particularly challenging when the price of everything keeps changing. And lately, the price of just about everything seems to be changing by getting more expensive. Heating oil and propane are no different. The cost of both fuels is affected by a few factors—most of which are beyond our control. And we’ve seen some sharp increases in fuel costs over the last year.

However, you can still have some control over your fuel costs and keep them predictable and affordable. Simply sign up for W.H. Riley’s Easy Pay program. And now is a great time to join. Our plan runs from September through July.

With summer now in full swing, winter and heating costs may be the furthest thing from your mind, but they shouldn’t be. Your fuel usage tends to increase in the colder months, and so does the price of fuel (largely due to supply and demand). But just because your usage increases or the cost of fuel increases doesn’t mean you bills need to shoot up. There’s a way to pay the same amount for your fuel all year long. Simply sign up for our Easy Pay program now so you reap the benefit this winter. Even in high usage months when you may need more than one fuel delivery, your bill won’t change.

Sound too good to be true? It isn’t. Here’s how it works: We estimate your total yearly fuel usage. Then we divide that into 11 equal payments. That means you’ll know exactly what your fuel bill will be each and every month all year long. How many of your other bills can you say that about?

Easy Pay is available to both our heating oil and propane customers. Plus, your Easy Pay payments can include the cost of our Security Blanket service plan. Receiving regular service for your heating equipment ensures that it’s running as efficiently as possible, and that keeps your fuel costs as low as possible.

Age-Appropriate Lessons for Children

propane kids massachusettsAt W.H. Riley & Son, we take pride in providing all of our customers (both residential and commercial) with the highest-quality fuels and highest standards of safety and service in southern Massachusetts.

Safety matters to us, and we want all of our propane customers to have a fun and safe summer as they enjoy their propane appliances. That means everyone in your household should know the basics of propane safety–including the kids.

Simple & Fun Propane Info

Propane has a tremendous safety record, but you still need to use it with caution, especially if there are young children in your southern Massachusetts home. Everyone in the household should know the basics of propane safety, especially what to do if they smell gas. Here are some tips for teaching your kids about propane safety. First and foremost, keep it simple and fun.

Give them some responsibility: There are some simple tasks you can put your kids in charge of that will help boost their confidence and make sure they retain the safety information you’re teaching them. Be sure to praise them when they perform their appointed tasks. For example, you can make your child your home’s inspection “Safety Ranger.” Create a checklist of all the propane appliances in and around your home and where the gas and carbon monoxide detectors are located. Teach them that propane smells like rotten eggs.

Let them help with safety planning: Choose a spot that’s a safe distance from your home where everyone in your family will meet in the event of an emergency like a propane gas leak. Any children in the household can help by making a sign for the meeting place and a map of how to get to it.

Practice, practice, practice: Kids perform a number of safety drills at school. You should do the same at home. The repetition will help them learn. Just like a school fire drill, schedule gas leak drills for your family to give your kids a chance to practice your propane emergency safety plan.

Have some fun: The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) website has a section just for kids with fun and educational activities focused on propane and propane safety. There are games, printable coloring pages, science experiments, videos, and more! Click here to check it out.
