Home Heating Maintenance: 3 Tips For Summer 2020

heating maintenance tips massachusetts

Keeping your furnace on top of its game is probably not the first thing on your mind as we head into the dog days of summer, but with things as unpredictable as they are in the world right now, it’s probably a good idea to stay ahead of the game on all things related to your home comfort.

Home Comfort Summer To-Do List

Here are three things you can do this summer to make sure your furnace can hit the ground running in heating season 2020/21:

  • Check/change/clean the air filters – Checking your furnace air filters is something you should do throughout the year, including during the summer months (especially if your furnace and air conditioner share a common filter). If your filters are washable, give them a good cleaning; if they are disposable, replace them. Clean furnace filters keep dirt, dust, and debris away from your living space and from your furnace, keeping efficiency high and reducing the need for heating repairs.
  • Test your thermostat – An inaccurate thermostat can cost you money and comfort, and summer is the perfect time to check it. If you have a zoned heating system that includes multiple thermostats, test each one separately. If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, it’s better to solve the problem now than in the fall or winter.
  • Check / clean your condenser – Early summer is a good time to give your outdoor condenser a once over. Check the lines leading to and from the unit for any obvious damage; if you find some, contact us for service. Then it’s time to give your condenser a good cleaning –  just be sure to turn off power at the breaker before you begin. Remove any large debris that may have accumulated during the offseason, then clean the condenser with mild detergent and a hose. If you notice any significant damage to the condenser’s “fins,” contact us for a repair.

When it comes to keeping your heating system clean and running efficiently, preventive maintenance is key…stay on top of routine heating service, even during the warm weather months!
