Exploring Historic Mansfield, MA
In 1640, Captain Myles Standish surveyed the land that would eventually become Mansfield. Colonists from the Massachusetts Bay colony acquired it as part of the Titiquet Purchase. In 1658, the first settlers arrived and began building a town.
Mansfield was officially incorporated in 1775. It takes its name from Lord William Murray, 1st Lord of Mansfield. One of the town’s first industrial ventures was a furnace to make shot and cannons for the Continental Army. In its early years, Mansfield was home to a grist mill, ironworks, foundry, straw businesses and multiple cotton mills. Mansfield is also the birthplace of Honey Dew Donuts!
