Staying on top of your heating oil supply

Tracking and staying on top of your heating oil supply will help you know when it is time to place your next fuel delivery.

First, you will want to have a general idea about how much heating oil you can expect to go through per winter season. Generally speaking a house that is about 2,000 to 2,500 square feet will use about five to eight gallons of heating oil a day (700 to 900 gallons a season) during the winter if temperatures hover right around the freezing mark.

At the top of most heating oil tanks is clear plastic cube. This is a gauge that will help you monitor your fuel levels. This tube should have numbers as well as a red marker or float that will indicate how much oil is left in your tank. When that marker is towards the bottom or you can’t see it at all your fuel supply is low. It is important to routinely read your gauge to make sure you have enough fuel.

It is time to place your next heating oil delivery when your gauge is at the 25% mark. This should leave you enough time to schedule a delivery without having to worry about running out of fuel entirely.
