Signs that it’s time for a furnace repair
No homeowner likes to have to repair a major piece of his or her home’s equipment and this includes a furnace. However, the good news is that your furnace will show certain signs that it needs some help. These signs include:
- Unfamiliar odors: Any unusual smells coming from your furnace can indicate that something isn’t quite right.
- Loud noises: It’s not abnormal to hear a low hum coming from your furnace, but anything like banging or rattling should be investigated.
- Leaking water: If you notice that puddles of water are forming around your furnace, contact a professional immediately. Clogged drains, the malfunctioning of internal parts and humidifier problems can all contribute to leaks. Not taking action if you notice a leak leaves room for your heating system to become severely damaged.
- A lagging thermostat: If you have your thermostat set to a certain temperature and it seems like your furnace can’t produce the heat needed to meet this temperature (or if your home can’t get warm at all!) you could be dealing with clogged air filters or heat exchangers, a malfunctioning thermostat or an exhaust system that is restricted. No matter what the root cause is, chances are the problem is only going to get worse over time.
- Increased heating bills: A significant increase in your heating bills from one season to the next that can’t be explained by an increase in fuel prices or a major change in the temperature can be a sign that your furnace isn’t working as efficiently and effectively as it used to. In addition to having someone come check this out, you may also want to think about upgrading your home heating system.
- A furnace that is constantly running or cycling on and off: Short cycling is going to contribute to wear and tear on your heating system and will make your heating system less effective. The same goes for a furnace that simply just doesn’t shut itself off. A furnace that is doing either of these things is not going to keep you comfortable so you definitely want to be in touch with a professional if you notice this happening in your home.
