Preventing Central Air Conditioning Breakdowns
W.H. Riley & Son’s AC maintenance is here to help you stay cool
We can’t think of any home or business owner here in southeastern Massachusetts or anywhere for that matter who wants to deal with his or her central air conditioning system breaking down. This is especially true during the summer – we all know how hot and humid it can get here! So wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power to prevent any issues when it comes to your AC?
Here at W.H. Riley & Son we certainly think the answer to this question would be yes. Fortunately, there are some fairly simple things a homeowner can do to keep an AC healthy and working properly.
Do not skip professional maintenance appointments
One thing that we can say with true and utter confidence is that you do not want to miss an annual maintenance appointment conducted by a professional for your central air conditioning system.
These professional inspections help ensure that your AC is working as efficiently and effectively as possible and add years to your system’s lifespan. Additionally, they are the best way to catch small issues before they turn into huge problems that could potentially lead to a full system breakdown.
Check your air filters regularly
If your air filter is dirty or clogged your central air conditioning system is going to have to work harder than necessary just to keep air circulating. This hard work could potentially cause big problems as well as wear and tear that will get in the way of your system lasting as long as it otherwise could.
Don’t block your vents
Central air conditioning can’t work well with blocked vents either. Blocked vents can make your AC work too hard just the way clogged filters can and that puts you at risk of your system breaking down from being overworked.
Keep the coils clean
Wiping and cleaning the coils in your AC’s condenser will help add years onto your system’s life and will help your AC operate more efficiently.
Know when it’s time for an upgrade
Whenever possible, you want to avoid being surprised that the time has come to replace your central air conditioning. Being as prepared as possible will help ensure that there won’t be a period of time where you are left without AC at all. Air conditioners usually last between about 12 and 15 years so if you are reaching this point it is probably best to look into an upgrade. We also recommend an upgrade if you are spending at least 50% of the cost of a replacement on frequent repairs – this just makes more financial sense.
