Explore the history of Lakeville, MA

Roughly one-fifth of Lakeville’s 36.1 square miles is water, and these many ponds (or lakes) gave it its name. The ponds made for arable land where Wampanoag people planted maize and beans for generations. In 1705, Europeans founded a settlement that became Lakeville. The town was incorporated on May 13th, 1853.

One of Lakeville’s most notable residents was a Wampanoag man named Benjamin Simonds. Born in 1751, he served as an aide-de-camp to George Washington at Valley Forge. The militia that Simonds was likely part of repelled British troops in New York and took part in the decisive Battle of Yorktown. After the Revolution, Simonds lived out his life in Lakeville on a military pension on a small plot near the mouth of the Nemasket River known as Ben’s Island.
